Teams Stats Glossary

Definitions for the stats used across Overall, Offense, and Defense table views.

Six Factor Analysis

Breaks down each team's net rating into six components (three offense + three defense) that explain why a team is succeeding or failing, expressed in net rating terms.

Current values are calculated directly from box-score components and are not ridge-regressed yet. Ridge-regressed values will be added in a future update. This is a different methodology than our Six Factor RAPM approach, though the results are broadly similar.

Offense (rORTG)
oTS = Offense from team shooting vs league average
oTOV = Offense from team turnovers vs league average
oORB = Offense from offensive rebounding (shown as ORB)
Defense (rDRTG)
dTS = Defense from opponent shooting vs league average
dTOV = Defense from forcing opponent turnovers
dDRB = Defense from ending possessions with rebounds (shown as DRB)
Net = rORTG - rDRTG • rORTG = oTS + oTOV + oORB • rDRTG = dTS + dTOV + dDRB
How to read signs: in this UI, positive values are good for OFF, DEF, Net, and all six factor components.
TS & TOV distribute first-chance relative ratings based on the team's shooting and turnover rates vs. league average. ORB/DRB captures second-chance point differential relative to league average.
Per 100 vs Totals: Per 100 is rate-based. Totals multiplies each per-100 value by possessions (OffPoss/100 for offense, DefPoss/100 for defense) and displays rounded whole numbers.

Core Ratings

ORTG

How many points a team scores per 100 possessions. Higher ORTG means a more efficient offense.

DRTG

How many points a team allows per 100 possessions. Lower DRTG means a stronger defense.

NetNet = rORTG - rDRTG

Overall team strength versus league average in points per 100 possessions. Positive means the team is outperforming league-average expectations.

OFFOFF = ORTG - League ORTG

Offensive impact versus league average. Positive means the team scores more efficiently than an average team.

DEFDisplay DEF = League DRTG - Team DRTG

Defensive impact versus league average, shown so positive is good. Higher DEF means the team is holding opponents below average scoring efficiency.

Six Factors

NetEffNetEff = oTS + dTS (displayed values)

How much of net rating comes from shooting efficiency differences between a team and its opponents.

NetPossNetPoss = oTOV + ORB + dTOV + DRB (displayed values)

How much of net rating comes from winning possession battles (turnovers and rebounding/second chances).

oTS

Amount of offensive net rating attributed to team shooting versus league-average true shooting. Positive is good.

oTOV

Amount of offensive net rating attributed to protecting (or losing) possessions through turnovers versus league average. Positive is good.

ORB

Amount of offensive net rating attributed to creating second-chance points via offensive rebounds (internal metric name: oORB). Positive is good.

dTS

Amount of defensive net rating attributed to opponent shooting versus league average. In display mode, positive is good.

dTOV

Amount of defensive net rating attributed to forcing opponent turnovers versus league average. In display mode, positive is good.

DRB

Amount of defensive net rating attributed to finishing possessions with defensive rebounds and limiting second chances (internal metric name: dDRB). In display mode, positive is good.

Off FTROff FTR = FTA / FGA

How often the offense gets to the free-throw line relative to shot attempts. Higher values mean more foul pressure.

Def FTRDef FTR = Opp FTA / Opp FGA

How often the defense sends opponents to the line relative to opponent shot attempts. Lower values are better.

3PLuck

Estimated defensive-rating swing tied to opponent three-point variance. Positive means opponents have shot worse from three than expected.

Shot Profile

Rim Freq

Percent of the team's shots taken at the rim. Higher values usually indicate a more pressure-oriented shot profile.

Rim FG%

Field-goal percentage on shots at the rim. Higher values mean better finishing.

Mid Freq

Percent of team shots from short + long mid-range combined.

Mid FG%

Field-goal percentage on combined mid-range shots.

SMR Freq

Percent of team shots from short mid-range (SMR).

SMR FG%

Field-goal percentage on short mid-range shots.

LMR Freq

Percent of team shots from long mid-range (LMR).

LMR FG%

Field-goal percentage on long mid-range shots.

3P Freq

Percent of team shots taken from three-point range.

3P FG%

Three-point percentage (non-heave attempts).

Def Rim Freq

Percent of opponent shots allowed at the rim. Lower values mean the defense is keeping teams away from the basket.

Def Rim FG%

Opponent field-goal percentage at the rim. Lower values mean better rim defense.

Def Mid Freq

Percent of opponent shots from short + long mid-range combined. Higher values often mean forcing less efficient shot locations.

Def Mid FG%

Opponent field-goal percentage on combined mid-range shots. Lower is better.

Def SMR Freq

Percent of opponent shots from short mid-range (SMR).

Def SMR FG%

Opponent field-goal percentage on short mid-range shots. Lower is better.

Def LMR Freq

Percent of opponent shots from long mid-range (LMR).

Def LMR FG%

Opponent field-goal percentage on long mid-range shots. Lower is better.

Def 3P Freq

Percent of opponent shots taken from three-point range.

Def 3P FG%

Opponent three-point percentage (non-heave attempts). Lower is better.

Team Raw

Team TS%

Team true shooting percentage (overall scoring efficiency including free throws and threes).

Team TOV

Team turnovers committed per 100 possessions.

Team ORB%

Percent of available offensive rebounds the team grabs.

Opponent Raw

Opp TS%

Opponent true shooting percentage allowed by the defense.

Opp TOV

Opponent turnovers forced per 100 possessions.

Opp ORB%

Percent of available offensive rebounds opponents collect.

Opp FTROpp FTR = Opp FTA / Opp FGA

Opponent free-throw rate allowed by the defense.

STOP

Defensive stops per 100 possessions, combining opponent turnovers with blocks recovered by the defense.
